SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team (4-17,2-7) used an all-around effort to notch a 70-58 win over North Texas (11-10, 2-7) on Friday night at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners outshot the Mean Green 48.8-31.8 percent from the field while outrebounding its conference foe, 43-34.
The win for UTSA snapped a four-game skid and saw the Roadrunners improve 3-6 at the Convocation Center. Veterans Carlie Heineman and Marie Benson led UTSA on the offensive end with 19 points each. The pair was followed by senior Crystal Chidomere with 13 points.
Defensively, the Roadrunners registered 43 rebounds, including a game-high 10 rebounds from Benson. UTSA also saw six offensive rebounds and two blocks from Chidomere.
Turning Points
UTSA led by five after a quarter and cushioned its lead with a 71.4 percent field-goal effort in the second quarter. The second frame saw six points from Benson and four points from freshman Karrington Donald as the Roadrunners took a 33-31 lead at the half.
The Roadrunners grew their advantage with an 11-0 burst to open the third quarter. Junior Kourtney Kekec got the run started with a 3-pointer at 8:12 of the frame before a pair of jumpers followed from Chidomere and Hawkins. UTSA lead by as many as 17 before North Texas closed out the quarter with a free throw from Adrianna Henderson.
The Mean Green battled to come within eight during the final frame, but Benson and Chidomere combined for 12 points to keep UTSA ahead and capture the win, 70-58.
