Roadrunners upset Owls, 62-58

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Behind a solid defense and four players in double figures, the UTSA women's basketball upset Rice (19-7, 9-5) with a 62-58 win on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

In the victory, UTSA (8-19, 6-9 C-USA) received a career-high tying 15 points from freshman Karrington Donald, which included three of the Roadrunners' six made three-pointers on the afternoon. Sophomore Marie Benson added an additional 13 points while seniors Crystal Chidomere and Carlie Heineman chipped in 11 points apiece.

The Roadrunners led through four quarters and stalled a fourth-quarter Owl rally as Benson delivered 13 fourth-quarter points. The forward made 5-of-7 shots in the final quarter and went 3-of-4 at the free throw line.

Overall, UTSA outshot the Owls for the game, 44 percent to 40 percent, and had a 40-30 advantage on the board.

Turning Points
With the Roadrunners seemingly in control early in the fourth quarter, Rice rattled off 5-of-10 shots from beyond the arc. Rice's Sydney Wiggins brought the Owls to within 53-50 with 2:58 remaining and then after a stop, a Rice layup to made it a one-point game.

Fighting to stay ahead, UTSA turned to Benson, who stopped the Rice run with 12 consecutive points for the Roadrunners. The Owls would put up a three-pointer to bring the score to 61-58 with seven seconds remaining but a Chidomere free throw sealed the victory for the home squad.
