No. 3 Texas Tech completes series sweep of UTSA on Monday

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA snapped third-ranked Texas Tech's 37-inning shutout streak with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Red Raiders held on for a 10-6 victory and completed the three-game sweep on Monday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA (2-4) also put an end to its scoring skid, which lasted 24.2 innings, when Bryan Arias squared up a two-run homer in the fifth, cutting Texas Tech's advantage to 7-2.

An inning later, the Roadrunners erupted for four runs, including three on Jonathan Tapia's two-out double to right field. Arias followed with a single through the middle that plated Tapia, trimming the Red Raiders' lead to 8-6.

However, UTSA was unable to score in its final three at-bats, while Texas Tech (8-0) put up solo runs in both the seventh and ninth to secure the win.

Connor Queen (1-0) earned the victory in relief, as the right-hander allowed two runs on two hits and a walk over 2.1 stanzas. Dane Haveman posted his second save of the campaign, pitching two scoreless frames with a strikeout.

Palmer Wenzel (0-1) took the loss for the Roadrunners. The lefty was the first man out of the bullpen and allowed four runs after issuing four walks and giving up a pair of hits during the fourth inning.

Meanwhile, Derek Craft received a no-decision following three scoreless panels to start the game for UTSA. The right-hander struck out two and allowed only one hit in his first career start.

Each team finished with seven hits.

The Birds were led by Tapia and Arias, both of whom posted two knocks and drove in three runs. Tapia also stole two bases, while Arias hit his second home run of the campaign.

UTSA will play its fourth game in as many days on Tuesday, as the Roadrunners travel north on I-35 to face No. 17 Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 6:33 p.m. at Disch-Falk Stadium in Austin. The game will air live on the Longhorn Network.
