No. 3 Texas Tech shuts out UTSA on Saturday night, 5-0

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA baseball team dropped the opening game of the series against No. 3 Texas Tech, 5-0, in front of 1,384 fans on Saturday night at Wolff Stadium.

The Red Raiders (6-0) scored three runs in the third inning and an error led to two unearned tallies in the seventh, while a trio of arms combined for a shutout win.

Davis Martin (2-0) worked five innings, allowing only three hits and striking out five to pick up the victory. Caleb Kilian and Jose Quezada each posted a pair shutout stanzas to secure the shutout.

Meanwhile, Roadrunner starter Chance Kirby (0-2) threw 111 pitches and struck out a career-high 10 batters. However, he was handed the loss after allowing five walks, four hits and three runs over five innings.

The Austin native fanned six of the first eight batters he faced. He tallied three strikeouts looking and seven swinging.

UTSA (2-2) managed only four hits in the game, all of which were singles.

Bryan Arias, Tony Beam, Ben Brookover and Ryan Stacy all had a hit apiece for the Roadrunners, who had only two runners reach scoring position during the contest.

Game two of the series will be played at 3 p.m. Sunday at Wolff Stadium. UTSA will send left-hander Steven Dressler (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound in an attempt to even the series. Texas Tech will counter with right-hander John McMillon (1-0, 1.80 ERA).
