Roadrunners rout Prairie View A&M and Missouri State

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team returned to its winning ways as the Roadrunners picked up victories over Prairie View A&M (1-4) and Missouri State (4-4) on day two of the UTSA Softball Classic.

UTSA 9, Prairie View 1 (5)

UTSA  (5-2) wasted no time taking control of its first game as the Roadrunners piled on two runs in the bottom of the first and one more in the third stanza. Limiting PVAMU to a single run through the first four innings, UTSA enforced the run-rule with four more runs in fifth and two more in the sixth.

The Roadrunners' fifth inning was highlighted by a two-RBI home run from Bailee Baldwin. The outfielder also cashed in UTSA's last two runs with her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth.

Pacing UTSA in the circle, Lizzy Fox improved to 2-2 after she allowed only four walks over 6.0 innings pitched.

UTSA 4, Missouri State 3 (9 innings)

In its second game of the day, UTSA took the lead in the bottom of the second when the Roadrunners collected two runs on a loaded bases situation. An infield hit and two walks set up an infield grounder by Celeste Borza to plate the game's first run. Hannah Boring then plated another Candice Hadd from third but was then thrown out at second on the play.

The Roadrunners would keep the Bears runless until the top of the fifth when Daphne Plummer delivered a RBI double to center field. Missouri State threatened to tie the game in the sixth inning, but wouldn't knot the score until the seventh inning. With runners on the corners and two outs, Madison Hunsaker singled to left center to plate MSU's second run and tie the game.

Going into extra innings, it took Victoria Villarreal just three pitches in the bottom of the ninth to end it. The rookie first baseman singled on a 1-1 pitch to plate the winning run from second and give UTSA the win.

In the circle, Madison Nelson pitched the first 7.1 innings, while  Fox closed the game with 1.2 innings pitched for her second win of the day and third save of the season.

UTSA will close play in its own softball tournament on Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. contest against Prairie View.
