SAN ANTONIO – UTSA swept a doubleheader from San Francisco on Saturday at Roadrunner Field. The Roadrunners won the middle game of the set by an 11-1 score and posted a 13-5 triumph in the nightcap to claim the season-opening series.
In addition to scoring 24 runs in the twinbill, UTSA (2-1) pounded out 22 hits, including nine for extra bases, and four home runs.
Ryan Stacy and Ben Brookover collected four hits apiece to pace the Birds at the plate. Stacy had two doubles and a pair of RBIs, while Brookover drove in three and hit a home run. Bryan Arias, Trent Bowles and Jonathan Tapia all went deep in the first game, as well.
The Roadrunners' pitching staff limited the Dons (1-2) to 12 hits and one earned run over the final two games.
Steven Dressler (1-0) earned the win in the first game of the day to even the series. The senior southpaw worked 6.2 scoreless frames while allowing only three hits.
Meanwhile, Derek Craft (1-0) was called out of the bullpen in the finale to hurl 4.2 scoreless stanzas. The right-hander fanned a career-high seven and gave up only one hit to pick up the victory.
UTSA HEAD COACH JASON MARSHALL ON THE DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP
"It's really difficult to win a doubleheader. To play 18 innings in a single day, especially when you score a bunch in game one, to come right back and put up another big number in the second game was just fantastic from an offensive standpoint. And then to limit them to just 12 hits on the day was fantastic from our pitching staff."
UP NEXT
The Roadrunners will travel to Abilene on Tuesday, Feb. 20 to face Abilene Christian (2-0) in a single, non-conference tilt. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field.
