SAN ANTONIO – UTSA softball (3-2) splits a pair of games on the first day of the UTSA Tournament, defeating Lamar, 4-2, before falling to Kansas by a 12-1 score on Friday at Roadrunner Field.
UTSA 4, Lamar 2
UTSA got on the board with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Celeste Loughman led off with a base hit to center field and moved to second off interference from Lamar's catcher. Hailey Garza then drilled a base hit up the middle to send Loughman home. Victoria Villarreal followed up double to drive in two more runs.
Loughman cushioned UTSA's edge with her first home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning.
Lamar's Kelly Meeuwsen put the Cardinals (1-4) on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the fifth inning, while Savana Guidry added an RBI single in the sixth. However, UTSA snapped Lamar's momentum by limiting LU to zero runs and zero hits in the final inning.
Madison Nelson collected the win the circle for UTSA for her second win of the year, while Lizzy Fox secured her first save of the season. The two combined for two strikes and zero walks.
Kansas 12, UTSA 1
In the nightcap, the Jayhawks (6-1) connected for 19 hits, including two home runs to score a 12-1 win over the Roadrunners.
Kansas opened the game with four consecutive singles to take an early 1-0 lead that ballooned to 4-0 by the turn of the inning when Sam Dellinger doubled to left center field.
The Jayhawks put up a fifth run in the top of the third, before UTSA got on board when Candice Hadd singled with bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth.
UTSA hammered out two more hits in the bottom of the fifth, but four more runs by Kansas in the top of the sixth solidified the win for the Jayhawks.
UTSA continues tournament play tomorrow with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Prairie View A&M and a 7 p.m. contest against Missouri State. For the full tournament schedule please click here.
