Softball splits pair of games on day two of UTSA Classic

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA split a pair of games on the second day of the UTSA Classic, defeating Abilene Christian, 4-2, before falling to Seton Hall by a 3-1 score on Saturday at Roadrunner Field.

Hannah Boring went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs to pace a nine-hit output for UTSA in the 4-2 win against Abilene Christian.

Boring launched a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the third inning that scored Candice Hadd and gave UTSA a 2-1 advantage.

The Roadrunners tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Celeste Loughman reached on an infield single, moved to second on a walk to Bailee Baldwin and scored on a double to left center by Ashlynn Walls. Hailey Garza then lifted a sacrifice fly ball to left field that plated Baldwin from third with the fourth run of the night.

ACU scratched for a run in the top of the seventh on a sac fly to center field by Callie Burris that scored Donelle Johnson, who reached on a leadoff walk.

The Wildcats (1-2) scored first when Brittany Barnhill sent a pitch over the fence in left field in the bottom of the second.

Madison Nelson went the distance in the circle for UTSA to pick up her first win of the year. The right-hander scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run.

Hannah Null (1-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs, all earned, on nine hits.

Loughman turned in her third straight two-hit performance in the 3-1 setback to Seton Hall (2-1). The sophomore went 2 for 3 with an RBI and now is hitting .545 on the young season.

Rodriguez also had a pair of base knocks, but it took the Roadrunners until their final at-bat to break through for a run against the Pirates right-hander Reganne Camp (2-0), who struck out six and scattered seven hits in a complete game.

Seton Hall broke open a scoreless deadlock with three runs in the top of the third. Payton Beaver followed a Sara Foster single with a one-out double down the left-field line. Alexis Walkden then plated Foster with a base hit up the middle. Beaver then came home on a double to right center to put the visitors up, 2-0. Alyssa Prukop then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to push home Walkden.

UTSA threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Rodriguez led off with a hard-hit single just past the shortstop. After a fielder's choice erased the runner at second, Candice Hadd put runners at first and second with a single up the middle. Following a strikeout, Boring singled through the left side of the infield to load the bases. Loughman came back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk and force home the Roadrunners' first run of the game. However, Camp induced a popup to second base to end the threat and the game and hand the home team its first loss of the season.

The Roadrunners (2-1) will close out the UTSA Classic against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-2) at 2 p.m. Sunday.
