Davis, Sturm invited to College Gridiron Showcase

ADDISON — UTSA seniors Devron Davis and Dalton Sturm have been named to the all-star rosters for the fourth annual College Gridiron Showcase & Symposium (CGS), which will be held on Jan. 6-10 at Greenhill School.

The Roadrunners pair will join more than 80 other NFL Draft-eligible players from around the country at the five-day showcase that uses a unique format with a controlled scrimmage rather than a game reliant on playing time and play calling.

Davis was a two-year starter at cornerback for the Roadrunners after transferring from Merced College. The Stockton, Calif., native registered 51 tackles (36 solo), six tackles for loss, three interceptions, 11 pass breakups and a forced fumble in 24 career games. As a senior in 2017, Davis posted 25 stops, four TFLs, six PBUs and a pair of picks, including one that he returned 24 yards for a touchdown in the 31-14 win at UTEP. He helped lead a defense that led C-USA in seven different statistical categories and currently ranks in the top 10 among all Football Bowl Subdivision teams in five.

Sturm started 35 career games at quarterback for UTSA. The Goliad, product completed 482-of-811 passes for 5,768 yards and a program-record 49 touchdowns and ran for an additional 1,227 yards and seven scores during his four-year career. In his final campaign, he threw for 2,185 yards and 15 TDs on 185-of-297 passing (62.3 percent), posted a 137.4 passing efficiency rating and rushed for 545 yards and a pair of scores. Sturm finished his career as UTSA's all-time leader in passing efficiency (134.7), broke the single-season standard for passing touchdowns with 20 in 2016 and set single-game records for passing yards (367), passing TDs (4), passing efficiency (257.9) and total offense (395).

CGS selects its rosters via a panel of football experts. Players come in for five days and four nights to be evaluated by professional football league scouts. The players receive professional coaching, mentoring, life coaching and seminars that will benefit them as they move forward in their professional lives in or out of football.

Since 2015, 273 CGS participants have had an opportunity to extend their careers through the NFL draft, free agency, rookies camp invitations and tryouts (including 105 from the 2017 CGS), with several others being drafted or signed to play in the CFL. More than 110 NFL scouts and executives representing 30 teams attended the 2017 event in Bedford, Texas. More than 40 CGS players are currently on NFL rosters.
