Jackson earns fifth weekly Conference USA freshman honor

IRVING, Texas – For the fifth time this season UTSA's Jhivvan Jackson has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, for the week ending Jan. 28, the league office announced Tuesday.

Jackson, who ranks as the fifth-leading freshman scorer in the nation at 18.7 points per game, was also recognized as the league's top frosh on Nov. 20, Dec. 26, Jan. 2 and Jan. 8. Jackson along with teammate Keaton Wallace (Nov. 13, Dec. 4, Dec. 11) have combined to win eight of the 12 weekly C-USA freshman honors this season.

Jackson, a Bayamón, Puerto Rico native, averaged 20.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in leading UTSA to a 1-1 week in Conference USA play. He closed the week shooting 45.2 percent from the floor, including a 58.8 percent clip from two, in 30.5 minutes per outing. Moreover, he averaged 11.5 points on 45.5 percent shooting in the second half of the two contests.

Jackson opened the game week with a team-high 17 points at Middle Tennessee on seven total field goals, including three 3-pointers, to go along with two boards and an assist. He scored each of UTSA's first nine second-half points against the Blue Raiders.

He then recorded a game-high 24 points on 10 of 19 from the floor, including 4 of 9 from deep in the Roadrunners' 12-point win at UAB. The combo guard also totaled four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 28 minutes. He opened the game's scoring by stealing the tip and converting a layup on the way to 13 first-half points on five buckets, including back-to-back threes, that helped UTSA build a 16-point halftime lead. Jackson's fourth 3-pointer of the night ignited UTSA's game-defining 25-14 run through the middle stages of the second half that resulted in a 21-point Roadrunner lead

Jackson has tallied three 30-point, 10 20-point and 19 double-digit scoring performances in 22 career games. His 411 total points rank third on the UTSA freshman scoring list, ahead of UTSA great and NBA draftee Derrick Gervin. He also ranks as the fourth-leading scorer in Conference USA this season.

Second-year head coach Steve Henson has now coached 12 C-USA Freshman of the Week award winners – the eight this season along with Byron Frohnen's three last season and Giovanni De Nicolao's one. UTSA had never produced a C-USA Freshman of the Week prior to Henson's arrival.

UTSA returns to the court Thursday, Feb. 1 at the Convocation Center against Marshall. Tipoff against the Thundering Herd is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will air nationally on beIN SPORTS (available on: Spectrum 417, AT&T U-verse 662 & 1662 HD, DISH 392 & 871 HD, DIRECTV 620).
