UTSA opens C-USA action with visits to Louisiana Tech and Rice

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA women's basketball team (2-10, 0-0 C-USA) will open Conference USA play on Friday, Jan.5 at 6:30 p.m. CT against La Tech (10-4, 1-0) as part of a two-game road swing to begin the conference season. The Roadrunners will follow that up with a contest at Rice (10-2, 0-0 C-USA) on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on C-USA TV. 

LA Tech game overview 
UTSA opens Conference USA play with its 13th game of the 2017-18 season with a Friday evening contest at La Tech. The game will tip at 6:30 p.m. in the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, La. The game tips-off the fifth season of C-USA play for both the Roadrunners and the Lady Techsters as both teams joined the league in 2013. The contest will feature live audio on goUTSA.com with Stu Paul providing play-by-play and will also be streamed across the globe on CUSA.tv. 

Inside the series: LA Tech leads 3-10 
UTSA and La Tech have met 13 times on the basketball court with the Lady Techsters (10-4, 1-0 C-USA) owning a 10-3 series advantage. The series started in 1984 but did not see a second meeting until 2005 when the teams met in the Rice Invitational (a 75-67 La Tech win). Most recently, UTSA and La Tech split last season's contest as the Roadrunners earned a 63-61 victory at the Convocation Center and the Lady Techsters earned 77-71 win at the Thomas Assembly Center. 

Getting to know LA Tech 
Standing at 10-4, head coach Brooke Stoehr and the Lady Techsters bring a six-game winning streak into the contest and an 8-1 record in home games this season. Tech has won five of its last six games by an average margin of 21 points. La Tech's closest margin was a 61-53 victory against North Texas in its league opener. Offensively, Kierra Anthony (13.5 ppg, 35 steals), Alexus Malone (13.4 ppg, 8.4 rpg) and Taylor Stahly (10.4 ppg, 37-83 three-pointers) lead LA Tech. The trio have combined for 26 double digit scoring games this season while both Anthony and Malone rank among the C-USA leaders in steals.

Rice game overview
UTSA continues Conference USA play with a Sunday afternoon contest at Rice. The game will tip at 2 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston. The contest will feature live audio on goUTSA.com with Stu Paul providing play-by-play and will also be streamed across the globe on CUSA.tv. 

Inside the series: UTSA leads 9-7
UTSA and Rice have met 16 previous times on the hardwood with the Roadrunners owning a 9-7 series advantage. The series started in 1983 and was played six times before being suspended until the 2008-09 season.

Getting to know Rice
The Rice Owls (10-2, 0-0 C-USA) closed out the 2017 calendar with their fifth consecutive win to establish a new school record with 10 non-conference victories, defeating Columbia 67-44 at Tudor Fieldhouse. Overall, Rice leads all of C-USA in three-point field goals made per game (8.6-34th in NCAA) and is second in the league in total three-pointers made (103-64th in NCAA). The Owls are also second in C-USA in three-point percentage (.377-29th in NCAA). Junior Nicole Iademarco is eighth in C-USA in three-point makes per game (2.5) and seventh in three-point field goal percentage (36.1) and has made at least one three-pointer in each of the Owls first 12 games.
