SAN MARCOS – For a third consecutive game, seniors Carlie Heineman and Crystal Chidomere and sophomore Tija Hawkins paced UTSA efforts on the court, but Texas State handed the Roadrunners a 91-38 setback on Tuesday evening in the Strahan Coliseum.
Heineman led UTSA with nine points, followed by Chidomere with seven and Hawkins with six. Defensively, the Birds received seven rebounds from Chidomere and five from Heineman and sophomore Marie Benson.
Overall, Texas State outshot the Roadrunners (2-7) 52.4 percent to 23.4 percent and won the rebounding battle, 44-38. The Bobcats also outscored UTSA 24-16 in the paint and bested the Roadrunners 16-0 on the fast break.
UTSA and Texas State kept it close through the opening quarter as both teams made 20 attempts at the basket, knotting the score three times and exchanging the lead four times. With the score tied at 11, the Bobcats utilized a 7-1 run to break away and take a 18-15 edge at the end of the frame.
The hosts extended their control as they outscored UTSA 24-8 in the second period to take a 19-point advantage at the half.
The Bobcats put up their largest scoring quarter of the game in the third as they outscored UTSA, 30-8. Texas State used a 13-0 run early in the frame and then ended the quarter on a 12-3 run to take a 72-31 edge.
In the fourth quarter, UTSA was held to its lowest scoring stanza, as the Roadrunners were limited to just seven points, their second lowest quarter this season.
UTSA will have a week to regroup before it heads to California to meet with San Diego on Dec. 16 and Cal State Fullerton three days later.
