SAN ANTONIO – George Willborn III poured in a career-high 22 points to lead six Roadrunners in double-figures and 12 Birds overall in the scoring column as UTSA routed Ottawa 125-64 Thursday evening at the Convocation Center.
The 125 points were the most by a Roadrunner team since scoring 136 against East Central on Nov. 22, 2008. Moreover, the Roadrunners totaled a program-record 67 rebounds, besting the previous record of 65 (also against East Central on Nov. 22, 2008).
Willborn III scored his 22 points on 8 of 16 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and three free throws. Jhivvan Jackson scored 17, Deon Lyle added a career-best 16, Nick Allen and James Ringholt each totaled 12 and Mitar Stanojevic finished with career-high tying 10.
UTSA shot an even 50 percent for the game, 46 percent from three and had a plus-34 rebounding margin. In addition, the Roadrunners totaled a 56-22 edge in the paint and outscored the Spirit 85-22 off the bench.
Ottawa was led by Tanner Riley's 14 points, while Matthew McClain added 11.
The win improved UTSA to 5-3 on the season, marking the first five-win month of November since 2009.
Ottawa scored the first basket of the game, but it was all Roadrunners over the final 39: 44. UTSA extended its lead to double-figures on a Kendell Ramlal and-1 at the 14:18 mark and to 20 points via Willborn III's 3-pointer with 10:33 to go in the half. Allen's triple five minutes later made it a 30-point Roadrunners advantage. Willborn III made it a 37-point halftime lead at 62-35 with eighth and ninth points of the game.
Nine Roadrunners scored in the first half, led by Jackson's 12 on 3 of 6 from the field and four at the free-throw line.
The second half was much of the same as the first stanza as the Roadrunners outscored the visitors 63-39 in the period. Head coach Steve Henson emptied the bench with 12 minutes to go and they responded with 44 total points.
