Women's basketball defeats Trinity in exhibition game, 74-60

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA defeated cross-city foe Trinity by a score of 74-60 on Friday night at the Convocation Center in its only exhibition game prior to the 2017-18 season.
 
Three Roadrunners reached double figures with sophomore Marie Benson leading the charge with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting while adding 18 rebounds and three steals. Senior Carlie Heineman followed with 14 points three assists and two rebounds and freshman Tasharian Robinson chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

UTSA shot 46 percent from the field on 28-of-61 shooting and outrebounded the Tigers 55-22.
 
In the opening quarter, UTSA went on an 8-0 run before Trinity got the board with its first points off a layup from Micah Weaver. Powered by 16 points from Benson, the Roadrunners led 23-12 at the end of the first 10 minutes of play and carried their momentum into the second quarter as they led 43-20 at the half.

The Roadrunners continued to extend its lead and led by as many as 23 points in the third quarter at the 4:09 mark on a layup by Robinson.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers picked up some steam offensively as they brought the deficit to 14 points with 6:01 left to play. Trinity ended the game on a six-point run fueled by a quartet of free throws but it was not enough to overcome UTSA's lead.

UTSA will officially open its season Friday, Nov. 10 against Sul Ross State at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
