UTSA rolls past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

SAN ANTONIO – Four Roadrunners scored in double-figures as UTSA led from start to finish in a 72-58 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Friday evening at the Convocation Center.

Keaton Wallace led the Roadrunners with 14 points, while George Willborn III and Kendell Ramlal combined to shoot 9 of 9 in scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively. Nick Allen rounded out UTSA's double-digit efforts with 10 points, including a pair of threes.

Ramlal's 11 points were a career-high, as were his four field goals.

UTSA shot 53 percent, making 25 of its 47 attempts, including nine from 3-point range. The Birds outrebound AMCC 31-26 and outscored the Islanders 26-16 in the paint.

Joseph Kilgore led the Islanders with a game-high 18 points, while Kareem South and Emmanuel Toney each scored 11. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot 40 percent (19 of 47) overall, but 70 percent (7 of 10) from three.

Wallace pushed the Roadrunners' lead to 49-29 at the 17:37 mark of the second half with his fourth 3-pointer of the game, and second in as many trips down the floor. UTSA scored only three points at the free-throw line over the next six-plus minutes until Ramlal sparked the Roadrunners with a block on the defensive end and a bucket on the ensuing possession, providing a 54-38 margin.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got no closer the rest of the way as the Roadrunners scored 20 points over the final 10 minutes – including a pair of highlight-reel dunks by Willborn III and Ramlal – to secure their fourth win over the young season.

After missing its first shot of the game, UTSA connected on each of its next eight to take a 19-5 lead five minutes into the contest. AMCC trimmed the Birds' lead to 19-11 on back-to-back 3-pointers, but UTSA let the visitors get no closer as a Wallace three sparked a 6-0 run that left the white-clad Roadrunners up 23-13 at the under-8 media timeout. The Roadrunners later stretched its lead out to 39-23 on a trey by Wallace and two consecutive deep makes from Austin Karrer.

The Roadrunners took a 41-27 lead into the intermission after shooting 60 percent (15 of 25) and owning a 16-10 rebounding edge. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi made 42 percent of its attempts through the opening 20 minutes.
