NASSAU, The Bahamas – Bradley's JoJo McGlaston made three free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining after being fouled on a desperation 3-pointer on what appeared to be the game's final possession to give Bradley a 71-69 win over UTSA Saturday morning at the Island of the Bahamas Showcase.
With the Roadrunners down one Giovanni De Nicolao was fouled with 8.1 seconds on the game clock. The sophomore proceeded to make both of his free throws, providing the 69-68 advantage and setting up the late-game sequence.
UTSA freshman guards Keaton Wallace and Jhivvan Jackson combined for 37 of the Roadrunners' points. Wallace scored a game-high 22 points – his second 22-point effort through four game this season – as Jackson poured in 15. The duo knocked down five of UTSA's eight triples and 8 of 15 free throws. De Nicolao also reached double-figures with 11.
Donate Thomas led a trio of Braves in double-digit with 18 points. McGlaston scored 15 and Darrell Brown chipped in 14.
UTSA closed the contest making 40 percent of its shots (23 of 57), including 50 percent in the second half. Bradley shot 46 percent (23 of 50) for the game. The Braves held a 34-33 edge on the glass and UTSA a 23-22 advantage in bench points.
UTSA opened the second half on a 10-3 run to overcome its four-point halftime deficit and take its first lead since the 10:07 mark of the first half. De Nicolao scored seven of the Roadrunners' points with a three from the right wing putting the Birds in front on the first possession following the under-16 media timeout.
Bradley twice stretched its lead back to seven, but the second time the lead was single-handily erased by Wallace with a 7-0 run that left the teams tied at 50 with 8:17 to go. Went on to take a lead and push it out to six at 60-54 two minutes later as Jackson connected on his second trey in as many trips down the floor.
The Braves tied the game at 64-all at the 1:44 mark after a 10-4 run. Wallace then scored UTSA's next three points at the free-throw line, but a Bradley free throw and 3-pointer from Darrell Brown put the Roadrunners down one before De Nicolao's final second free throws.
UTSA used a 7-2 run in the early stages of the opening half to take a 17-10 lead and force a Bradley timeout with 12:21 showing on the clock. However, Bradley exited the timeout and scored the game's next 16 points to go up 26-17 14 minutes into the game. During the Braves' run UTSA went 0 of 10 from the field and committed six turnovers. Nick Allen halted the Bradley run with an inside score at the 5:34 mark and Wallace followed shortly thereafter with a mid-range jumper. UTSA outscored Bradley 5-4 the remainder of the half to trim the Braves' lead to 30-26 at the intermission.
UTSA shot 32 percent and Bradley 42 percent through the opening 20 minutes as the squads exchanged four leads.
