UTSA rolls past East Central in season opener

SAN ANTONIO – Keaton Wallace scored a game-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers in his UTSA debut to lead the Roadrunners to a 92-59 season-opening win over East Central Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

Wallace was joined in double-figures by George Willborn III and Jhivvan Jackson with 14 points each, while Byron Frohnen and Adrian Rodriguez both added 10.

UTSA closed the game shooting 47.1 percent (33 of 70) from the floor and outrebounded the Tigers 51-29. The Roadrunners totaled 52 points off the bench, 19 off turnovers and 16 on second-chance opportunities.

Da'Rion King led East Central with 15 points, counting 11 of those at the free-throw line. The Tigers shot 32.0 percent (16 of 50) for the game.

The first half played as a foul-riddled affair with East Central reaching the double-bonus nine minutes into the game. Despite the numerous Tiger opportunities at the free-throw line, UTSA maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the half, ballooning its advantage to the 45-25 halftime score on a Wallace trey 70 seconds before the break. UTSA shot 44.4 percent (16 of 36) in the half, while limiting East Central to 7 of 22 (31.8 percent).

UTSA quickly put the game out of reach in the opening stages of the second half. Wallace connected on a mid-range jumper and a 3-pointer, then Nick Allen followed with a bucket inside before Wallace capped the 10-0 run with his sixth triple of the game for a 55-26 Roadrunner lead.

The Roadrunners went on to lead by as many as 34 as UTSA improved to 23-14 all-time in season lid-lifter, including a 19-2 ledger at the Convocation Center.
