Roadrunners fall to ASU at Wells Fargo Arena

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sophomore Marie Benson had a double-double for a second-straight game but it wasn't enough as the Roadrunners lost to Arizona State 74-42 on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena.

Benson led UTSA (1-1) with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She also had a team best two blocks as well as a steal. Senior Carlie Heineman added nine points and a squad-high three steals while sophomore Tija Hawkins and freshman Karrington Donald added six points each.

Sabrina Haines and Kianna Ibis scored 16 points apiece to lead ASU (1-0) scoring. Ibis also collected nine rebounds while Char Johnson-Chapman added seven.

Overall, the Roadrunners pulled down 31 boards and shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the field, while the Sun Devils shot 47.1 percent (32-of-68) from the field and managed 42 rebounds. UTSA forced 14 turnovers by ASU but committed 22.

The Roadrunners fell behind early when they missed five of their first 11 shots en route as ASU jumped out to a 16-9 first quarter lead. The Sun Devils advantage only grew from there as ASU outshot UTSA (43.5-26.3) from the field in the second quarter.

The third quarter saw UTSA put up back-to-back runs including consecutive three-pointers from Donald and Kourtney Kekec but it was not enough to overcome ASU. The Sun Devils stretch their lead to over 20 points in the first few minutes of the period, finishing the quarter with a 56-31 advantage.

Arizona cushioned its lead with 18 points in the fourth quarter to solidify the win.

The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday when they welcome UT Arlington to the Convocation Center. Tipoff between UTSA and the Mavericks is scheduled for a 7 p.m.
