SAN ANTONIO – Marianne Hernandez scored on a free kick from near midfield, but UTSA dropped a 3-1 decision to UAB in Conference USA action on Sunday afternoon at Park West Athletics Complex.
After the Blazers (10-2-3, 4-1-1 C-USA) opened with a 2-0 lead in the first half, Hernandez took a free kick from a few steps inside the midfield line. The shot carried into the six-yard box before taking one hop and into the back of the net, trimming the lead in half.
However, UAB added a second-half score to clinch the contest.
Hernandez's 28th-minute score was her first of the season.
The Blazers opened the scoring in the 8th minute, as Rachel Green found the back of the net on a pass that deflected off UTSA goalkeeper Michelle Cole's hands.
Eight minutes later, UAB doubled its lead after Megan Hudgens had a shot blocked that found the feet of Caroline Kehrer, who knocked it into the netting.
Hudgens scored as well in the 52nd minute.
Melissa Cameron played the ball ahead into space for Hudgens, who used her left foot to place it neatly inside the post.
The Blazers took 13 shots, including eight on goal, and were awarded five corner kicks.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners (2-12, 1-6 C-USA) attempted 10 shots, putting three on target.
Hernandez took four shots, including another that was saved, while Cailey Elder and Jordyn Lacy attempted two apiece.
UTSA will return to play on Thursday, Oct. 19 against WKU. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Park West Athletics Complex.
