SAN ANTONIO – Old Dominion scored two goals in the first 14 minutes and held on the rest of the way to defeat UTSA 2-1 on Friday night at Park West Athletics Complex.
The Monarchs (5-3-2, 2-1 C-USA) netted the game's opening goal in the fifth minute, as Kira Laurento took advantage of a ball in the box that was unable to be cleared by the Roadrunners (2-8, 1-2 C-USA). Laurento put a right foot on the ball and slid it past UTSA goalkeeper Gabriella Mariello into the back of the net.
Four minutes later, the Roadrunners pulled even, as Channing Machen posted her third goal of the season.
Ellis Patterson played a ball forward that found its way past defenders and at the feet of Machen, who neatly placed it into the back of the net.
However, Old Dominion picked up the game-winner only five minutes later.
Iris Achterhof rifled a shot toward goal that Mariello knocked away. The rebound landed at the feet of Natalie Johnson, who drilled it into the back of the net for the final score of the contest.
The Monarchs took 11 shots, including five on target, and five corner kicks. The Birds attempted four shots, including two on goal.
UTSA will return to action on Sunday afternoon against Charlotte. The Conference USA tilt is slated to kick off at 12 p.m. at Park West Athletics Complex.
