Machen, Mariello lift UTSA past Middle Tennessee on Sunday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Channing Machen netted the game-winner in the 34th minute, while Gabriella Mariello posted a shutout to lead UTSA to a 1-0 victory over Middle Tennessee at Dean A. Hayes Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Roadrunners (2-7, 1-1 C-USA), who snapped a seven-match losing streak, captured its first victory since Aug. 18.

UTSA tested the Blue Raider goalkeeper, Sydney Chalcraft, six times before Machen's goal made it into the back of the net.

Jasmine Marwan played a ball across the box that set up Machen, who finished for the second time this season.

Less than a minute later, Middle Tennessee (3-5, 0-1 C-USA) received a penalty kick, but Amber Hoot's shot from the spot hit off the crossbar.

The Blue Raiders attempted seven shots in the second half, but only two were on target and both were saved by Mariello to secure the win.

Overall, Middle Tennessee took 13 shots, while the Roadrunners attempted 10. UTSA held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Roadrunners return to San Antonio for two league matches next weekend. UTSA will host Old Dominion on Friday, Sept. 29, before welcoming Charlotte to Park West Athletics Complex two days later.
