UTSA visits Southern Miss to open Conference USA play

SAN ANTONIO – Following non-conference action that saw the UTSA volleyball team (2-10) match up against six 2016 NCAA Tournament participants, the Roadrunners begin Conference USA play this weekend with a showdown against Southern Miss at 1 p.m. Sunday in Hattiesburg, Miss.

UTSA wrapped up non-conference action on Tuesday against No. 6 Texas in front of a record-breaking 2,711 fans in the Convocation Center. Senior Marijeta Runjic paced the Roadrunner offense with 10 kills, followed by sophomores Kara Teal and Brianna McCulloch, with nine and seven kills, respectively. Amanda Gonzales and Allison Vaughan split setter duties, with Gonzales dishing out 29 assists and Vaughan adding nine of her own. Almost every Roadrunner who stepped on the court recorded a dig, with Emily Ramirez leading the defense with a match-high 17 digs. The Birds also had six service aces on the night, including three from Gonzales.
 
Scouting Southern Miss
Series: Sunday's match will mark the eighth meeting between the Roadrunners and the Golden Eagles, with UTSA holding the all-time series lead 8-0. This will be the second consecutive year that UTSA opens conference play against Southern Miss. Last season, the Roadrunners swept the Golden Eagles in the conference opener. In the match, Runjic propelled the UTSA offense with 13 kills while Shelby Williams directed the Roadrunner defense with a match-high 12 digs.
 
Golden Eagle Notables
Southern Miss is coming off a 3-2 victory over North Texas on Friday. Freshman Chandler Marshall and junior Kylie Grandy paced the Golden Eagle victory, as the outside hitters posted 25 kills apiece against the Mean Green. Southern Miss' defense was directed by Natalie Druhan who recorded a match-high 27 digs against North Texas. Overall, Southern Miss is 10-6 on the season including a 6-1 mark at home. The Golden Eagles are hitting .235 as a team while limiting their opponents to a .186 showing.
