Houston's top-10 finish guides Roadrunners to eighth place at Jim West Challenge

THE WOODLANDS — Julie Houston registered her sixth career top-10 finish to guide the UTSA women's golf team to eighth place at the Jim West Challenge on Tuesday at the Fazio Course (par 71/6,010 yards) at The Club at Carlton Woods.
 
Houston fired a 4-under-par 209 to tie for ninth place in the 71-player field. The junior from Allen carded her second 69 of the event on Tuesday in a round that was highlighted by five birdies, four as part of a 33 on the back nine. The two-time all-conference performer also posted a 69 in her opening round along with a 71 in the second 18 on Monday. She finished with a team-high 14 birdies, which ranked third among all players.
 
Ana Gonzalez finished second among Roadrunners, as the freshman posted a 218 (74-73-71) to tie for 31st. 
 
Becky McGeehan tied for 37th with a 220 (74-71-75), while Nikki Long (75-75-72—222) and Madison Kidd (75-72-75—222) tied for 44th to round out the UTSA lineup. Alexandra Lessing was 70th (89-82-74—245) while competing as an individual.
 
The Roadrunners posted their second straight 287 and finished eighth with a 14-over 866, just one shot behind TCU and nine better than Augusta (875).
 
Duke won the team crown with an 819 behind individual medalist Leona Maguire's 13-under 200 (67-63-70). Oklahoma was second with an 841, followed by Texas Tech (842), Kent State (844), Texas A&M (851) and Missouri (854).
 
The Roadrunners will return to action on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 18-19, when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship.
