FORT WORTH, Texas – UTSA volleyball wrapped up its first tournament of the season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-13) loss on the road to TCU at the Cowtown Classic on Friday night.
Marijeta Runjic led the Roadrunners with a match-high 13 kills while Kara Teal added eight and Brianna McCulloch chipped in seven. Amanda Gonzales paced the offense with a contest-high 30 assists and Emily Ramirez hauled 12 digs.
After securing 80 assists overall on the day, Gonzales was named to the Cowtown Classic All-Tournament team while Megan Slan collected six block assists, pushing her career total to 105. The mark is good for eighth-best in program history.
Trading points to open the match, UTSA jumped out to a 15-11 lead before TCU rallied back to come within one at 20-19. A pair of kills from Runjic and McCulloch cushioned the Roadrunners' lead, but TCU answered right back to tie the set at 23. The Horned Frogs would claim the last two points off a service and a kill from Sarah Swanson.
TCU took the early advantage in the second set with a 3-1 lead. UTSA battled back with a 4-1 run to come within four, but could not pull even before TCU closed the set, 25-18.
An 11-1 spurt in the third set helped TCU race to a 14-6 lead, and the Horned Frogs never looked back.
The Roadrunners return to the court next weekend in the Diet Coke Classic in Minneapolis, where the Roadrunners will square off against No. 4 Minnesota, Tennessee and West Virginia.
