Patterson scores twice in 2-1 victory

SAN ANTONIO – Ellis Patterson scored two goals in the first nine minutes and UTSA held on for a 2-1 victory over Abilene Christian in the season opener on Friday night at Park West Athletics Complex.

Patterson put the Roadrunners (1-0) on top in the fourth minute, as she was played into space on a pass from Marianne Hernandez. The freshman shot across the goal and tucked the ball inside the far post to open her collegiate debut.

The Austin native doubled her output five minutes later, as she one-timed a beautiful lofting pass from Tara Giesen that was guided into the back of the net.

The Wildcats (0-1) managed their lone score in the 28th minute, as Christina Arteaga scored on a shot from 30 yards out that cut the lead in half.

The visitors threatened to pull even in the 69th minute as Arteaga stepped to the spot for a penalty kick.

However, Gabriella Mariello stretched out to her right and knocked away the shot, thwarting the threat.

Abilene Christian had one last chance in the 82nd minute, as a goal was called off due to a whistle for an offside violation.

The Roadrunners posted a 16-15 edge in shot attempts, while both teams received two corner kicks.

Patterson led UTSA's offensive attack with four shots, including the two goals. Dina Draguicevich and Jordyn Lacy both attempted three shots apiece.

Michelle Cole posted five saves in net during the first half, while Mariello tallied two stops, including the penalty kick attempt in the final 45 minutes.

UTSA will hit the road on Sunday, as the Roadrunners take on TCU in Fort Worth. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
