DALLAS — UTSA's Zander Lozano captured the 108th Texas Amateur title on Sunday at Lakewood Country Club.
Lozano opened the 72-hole event with a 4-under-par 67 that was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 fourth on Thursday. The second-team All-Conference USA selection then fired back-to-back 70s on the strength of a combined nine birdies on Friday and Saturday to keep himself in contention for the state's most prestigious amateur championship.
In Sunday's final round, Lozano carded a 3-under 33 on the front nine, as the Fair Oaks Ranch native wrote down birdies on Nos. 1, 4 and 9. He countered his only bogey of the round — a five on the 10th — with a three on the par-4 15th and a four on the par-5 17th and cruised to a four-shot victory after posting his second 67 of the tournament.
"It's an honor," Lozano told the Texas Golf Association's (TGA) website. "It still hasn't sunk in yet. I can say that this was one of the best-run championships I've ever played in, though. All of the TGA events are."
Lozano, who is entering his senior year with the Roadrunners, finished with a 10-under 274 (67-70-70-67), four strokes in front of a three-way tie for second place between Brady Purdom, Hunter Shattuck and Levi Valadez. It marked his third appearance in the Texas Amateur, as he finished 23rd at last year's event at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio and 41st in his first start in 2015 at Dallas' Bent Tree Country Club.
"We are very excited for Zander," head coach John Knauer said. "He has worked so hard over the past three years, so it's great to see him get to enjoy the fruits of his labor. This win will open up many doors for him, but most importantly he knows he can win on the biggest stage. That confidence will pay huge dividends as he heads into his senior year."
