UTSA opens competition at Conference USA Championships

EL PASO — UTSA began competition at this weekend's Conference USA Championships on Thursday, as a pair of Roadrunners participated in the first four events of the two-day heptathlon.

Gabriyella Torres sits in 10th place in the 20-woman field after the first day of the multi-event competition, while Chase Whiting is 16th.

Torres has racked up 2,985 points through the opening four events and she is just four points out of ninth place, 41 out of eighth and 43 out of seventh. The sophomore from Port Isabel, who came into the meet with the league's fourth-best score of the season, registered personal records in the 100-meter hurdles (14.86) and shot put (33-10 ¾/10.33m) and she also recorded the third-best high jump clearance of the day (5-5 ¾/1.67m).

Meanwhile, Whiting has a score of 2,840 points on the strength of career bests in the 100m hurdles (14.66), high jump (5-1/1.55m) and shot put (30-9/9.37m).

The four-day meet will continue on Friday.
