EL PASO — Adrian Riley sits in third place after the opening five events of the decathlon at this weekend's Conference USA Championships.
Riley, who came into the meet with the league's second-best score this season, racked up 4,055 points on Thursday and he ranks behind day one leader Scott Filip of Rice (4,237) and FIU's Chris Sullivan (4,062).
The junior from Kingston, Jamaica, saw his score bolstered by new personal records in the 100 meters (10.88), long jump (wind-aided 24-10 ½/7.58m), high jump (6-6 ¼/1.99m) and 400m (50.11). His long jump measurement topped the 12-man field and it moved him into fifth place on the program's all-time performers chart.
Meanwhile, Jake McDaniel sits in eighth place with his 3,541 points, but he is just 40 points behind Rice's Colton Torrance, who is seventh. His score was bolstered by career bests in the long jump (wind-aided 22-7/6.88m), high jump (6-6 ¼/1.99m) and 400m (52.34).
The four-day meet will continue on Friday.
