SAN ANTONIO — UTSA's women's track & field team will begin postseason competition this weekend when it competes at the Conference USA Championships. The four-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Thursday with the two-day heptathlon at Kidd Field on the campus of UTEP.
Friday will see the final three disciplines of the hep contested, along with the hammer and 10,000 meters. The preliminary running heats, discus, long jump and pole vault will take place on Saturday and the remainder of the events, including the running finals, are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. (CT) on Sunday (click here for the complete meet schedule).
The Roadrunners will be led by Syd Howells, who comes into the weekend with the conference's top mark in the 100 meters (PR 11.44), while ranking fourth in the 200m (PR 23.17) and she also is a member of the squad's second-place 400m relay quartet (45.29).
All told, UTSA has a total of 12 marks that rank among the top four in the league.
Gabriyella Torres owns the second-best high jump clearance (PR 5-8/1.73m) in addition to the fourth-best heptathlon score (PR 4,837 points).
Both Roadrunners relay teams come into the weekend with the circuit's second-fastest times of the season with the 1,600m relay boasting a top mark of 3:37.52.
Meanwhile, a quartet of Roadrunners rank third in the circuit coming into the meet.
De'Stini Henderson has the third-fastest 100m time (PR 11.49), Caroline Bellows owns the third-highest pole vault clearance (PR 11-11 ¾/3.65m), N'Dia Warren-Jacques has the third-longest shot put measurement (49-6 ¼/15.09m) and Shalise Borden stands third in the hammer (PR 188-1/57.32m).
Jennifer Arinze is fourth in the 400m (UTSA-record 54.07) and Elsha Allen also ranks fourth in the triple jump (PR 40-8 ¾/12.41m).
UTSA has won a total of five conference crowns and 63 individual/relay championships in program history. The Roadrunners finished in ninth place a year ago.
