Former Roadrunner John Bormann gets called up by Pittsburgh Pirates

SAN ANTONIO — Former Roadrunners catcher John Bormann was called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday and he became the first player in UTSA history to join a Major League Baseball (MLB) roster. Bormann wasted no time getting into a game, as he pinch hit in the ninth inning of Sunday's contest at the Miami Marlins.

Bormann was drafted by the Pirates in the 24th round of the 2015 MLB Draft and immediately joined the Bristol Pirates, where he played 25 games, batting .235.

He then moved up to the Single-A West Virginia Power the following season, where he saw the field in 52 games and recorded 43 hits, including nine doubles, a triple and two home runs, to go along with 22 runs scored, 20 RBIs and 11 walks.

This season, the Seguin native had appeared in seven games for the Bradenton Marauders before getting called up.

Bormann played all four years of his collegiate career with the Roadrunners and finished ranked among the top 10 in UTSA's all-time record book in games played (6th/208), games started (9th/199), at-bats (7th/731), doubles (t-10th/43), fielding chances (1st/1,461) and putouts (2nd/1,229).

He was a 2013 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) All-Tournament Team selection after helping UTSA capture the WAC Tournament title that season and that helped the Roadrunners make its third NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. Bormann also was on the Johnny Bench Award watch list and a TD Ameritrade Fan's Choice Award finalist that season. In 2014, he was named a first-team All-Conference USA honoree.
