UTSA to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Prairie View A&M in midweek matchups

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open a six-game home stand on Tuesday when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi followed by Prairie View A&M on Wednesday with both starts slated for 6 p.m.

Tuesday will mark the second meeting this season with the Islanders after the Roadrunners captured a 7-3 victory on Feb. 28 in Corpus Christi.

The Roadrunners (14-12) head into the week off its first Conference USA series win of the season at Louisiana Tech. UTSA took the first two games of the series before facing its first shutout of the year. With hits in just two games, including a 5-for-6 performance at Baylor, second baseman Bryan Arias was tabbed the league's Co-Hitter of the Week on Monday. He hit .412 for the week and posted career marks in hits, runs scored, RBIs and home runs.

UTSA owns C-USA's second-best team batting average at .306. Tony Beam is one of five players boasting a .300 or better average with a .370 clip and he has registered 27 hits, 15 runs scored, four doubles, a triple, a pair of home runs and eight RBIs.

On the bump, reliever Chris Muller boasts a league second-best 1.03 ERA in his 26.1 innings of action. He's earned a save four times in 11 appearances and leads the pitching staff with 35 strikeouts. He is holding opponents to a .154 average.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi makes the trek to the Alamo City with a 10-19 overall record and is 1-4 in its last five contests. In the last outing for the Islanders, they captured an 8-4 win against conference opponent New Orleans.

As a team, the Islanders are hitting .277 and are led by Cullen Jozwiak. The senior is hitting at a .324 clip with 33 hits, 20 runs scored, 15 RBIs, 10 walks and four stolen bases.

Meanwhile, reliever David Worrell leads the pitching staff with a 3.38 ERA in 13 appearances. He's logged 21.1 innings and owns a 1-2 record.

Prairie View A&M also will play a pair of midweek games this week and will take on Texas State on Tuesday before facing the Roadrunners on Wednesday. The Panthers are 12-22 on the season and are coming off a conference series win against Grambling State. Prairie View A&M swept the doubleheader with 10-0 and 7-5 wins.
 
Leading the way for the Panthers is Cody Den Beste with a .352 batting average and a team-best 43 hits. He is the only Panthers player to appear in all but one game this season.
