SAN ANTONIO — Nolan Trabanino tossed the first shutout of his career and led UTSA to a 6-0 victory against Florida Atlantic on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The southpaw from Friendswood threw the team's first complete game of the season and second shutout of the year. Trabanino allowed just four hits, walked five and struck out two in the gem.
Offensively, UTSA (20-17, 9-8 C-USA) registered nine hits, led by Kevin Markham's 3-for-4 performance. The senior center fielder recorded his seventh triple of the season and is now one away from tying the program's single-season record.
Meanwhile, C.J. Pickering was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and walk.
The Roadrunners did all their scoring through the first five innings with multiple runs in the fourth and fifth.
UTSA opened with a lone run in the second after Ben Brookover led off the stanza with double. A fly out placed Brookover 90 feet from home plate and he then crossed dish on Chris Estrada's RBI ground out.
A two-run fourth inning gave UTSA a 3-0 advantage.
Eight Roadrunners batters then stepped to the plate in the fifth and produced scores from Markham, Trent Bowles and Bryan Arias.
Markham led off the inning with his team-leading seventh triple and scored on the next at-bat after Arias reached on a fielding error. Arias and Bowles then came home on Estrada's two-run single.
UTSA was held off the board in the last three innings.
Owls relief pitchers Nick Swan and Mike Ruff combined for three scoreless frames of one-hit baseball and four strikeouts. Swan struck out the side in the seventh, which accounted for three of his four strikeouts.
Florida Atlantic (24-13-1, 11-6 C-USA) dropped its first series of the season and now has lost four straight outings.
UTSA will look to sweep the series at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
