SAN ANTONIO — Syd Howells and UTSA's 400-meter relay lead the Conference USA standings after the opening six meets of the outdoor season.
Howells is tied with Rice's Hannah Jackson atop the league's 100 meters leaderboard. The sophomore from Round Rock clocked a career-best time of 11.44 on March 18 at the season-opening UTSA Invitational. The clocking was the third-fastest performance in program history.
Meanwhile, Howells also paces the circuit as part of the Roadrunners' 400m relay quartet. Tadrian Rose, De'Stini Henderson, Olivia Esemena and Howells passed the baton in a season-best 45.29 at the UTSA Invite and that stands as the second-fastest time in school annals. The foursome also owns the fifth-best time, a 45.59, which came the following week at the Roadrunners Invitational.
Howells also is one of three Roadrunners that currently rank second in the circuit, as she is joined by N'Dia Warren-Jacques and the squad's 1,600m relay team.
Howells peeled off the second-best 200m time in program history at the Roadrunners Invite when she ran the curve in a personal-record 23.17 back on March 25 and Warren-Jacques registered a third-best shot put measurement in school annals at the same meet when she launched the sphere 49-6 ¼ (15.09m).
Last weekend saw the mile relay quartet of Chelsea Taylor, Jennifer Arinze, Sierra Andres and Paige Patterson pass the stick in 3:37.52 at the Mt.SAC Relays and that was the second-fastest performance in UTSA history.
The Roadrunners also have a pair of marks that rank third in the conference.
Caroline Bellows cleared 11-11 ¾ (3.65m) in the pole vault at the Roadrunners Invitational and Shalise Borden launched the hammer a career-long 186-0 (56.69m) at the UTSA Invitational.
UTSA will continue their campaign at Saturday's J. Fred Duckett Twilight in Houston.
