SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA baseball team returns to the Alamo City to begin a five-game home stand beginning on Tuesday with Incarnate Word at 6 p.m.
In what would have been the second meeting of the season with Incarnate Word becomes the first of two in 2017. UTSA and Incarnate Word were scheduled to meet last Tuesday, but heavy rains postponed the contest until Tuesday, May 9.
UTSA heads into the week with an even 17-17 overall record after ast weekend's series at FIU. The Roadrunners dropped two of three and now sit in a three-way tie for sixth in the league standings with a 7-8 mark. UTSA won its only game against FIU off Jesse Baker's second grand slam this past Friday.
As a team, the Roadrunners remain steady with a .299 average and they rank in the top five in eight offensive categories.
A new name sits atop the season stat sheet with Ben Brookover boasting a .364 batting average. Not far behind is catcher Tony Beam (.360) and Bryan Arias (.357). Arias represents UTSA in eight offensive categories in the Conference USA leaderboard.
Meanwhile, on the bump, making his ninth start of the season will be left-hander Steven Dressler. Saturday was the first weekend start that the southpaw was not a part of. He owns a 4.25 ERA in 36 innings.
With just one week in between scheduled games, Incarnate Word hit the road for its Southland Conference series against Nicholls and dropped two of three. The Cardinals were handed a 9-8 setback in the rubber game.
In their last five outings, the Cardinals are 1-4 and also own a 4-11 mark in road contests.
Lading the charge for UIW is Kyler Genenbacker. The outfielder is batting .359 on the season and is third on the team with 37 hits, including four doubles. Mark Whitehead leads the squad with 46 hits and 34 runs, while batting .319.
The Cardinals have yet to name a starter, but Bernie Martinez leads the pitching staff with a 3.74 ERA in nine appearances. He's pitched a complete game and has logged 55.1 innings with a team-best 38 strikeouts.
UTSA leads the all-time series, 11-10.
