SAN MARCOS — UTSA had two big scoring innings to help the Roadrunners to a 9-1 victory at I-35 rival Texas State on Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
UTSA (7-5) had its biggest scoring innings with a four-run second inning and a three-run seventh.
The Roadrunners outhit the Bobcats (6-7) in the first of two meetings this season, 15-5.
Right-hander Karan Patel earned the win for UTSA behind his five innings of work. Patel struck out four and gave up one run on three hits.
All but one Roadrunner notched at least one hit with leadoff man Skyler Valentine going 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs. Valentine now leads the team with four long balls this spring.
Both teams opened up with one run each with Jesse Baker scoring for the Roadrunners on a RBI ground out.
In the second inning, three consecutive hits scored Bryan Arias on a RBI single. An Aldo Buendia sacrifice bunt scored C.J. Pickering and was followed by Valentine's solo shot.
UTSA tacked on another run in the fourth after Tony Beam tripled to center and scored on a throwing error.
The Roadrunners capped off its scoring in the seventh with scores from Kevin Markham, Chris Estrada and Baker. Markham got the wheels in motion on a one-out double and later scored on Ben Brookover's grounder to first. Baker followed on the next at-bat on Estrada's RBI single. Estrada scored the final run on an Arias's triple.
UTSA will continue its road swing this weekend at defending Big 12 Champion and ninth-ranked Texas Tech beginning on Friday, March 10, at 6 p.m.
