SAN ANTONIO — No. 24 Utah took advantage of a costly UTSA error in the second inning and the Utes picked up a 7-1 victory in Sunday's series finale at Roadrunner Field.
The defending Pac-12 Champion Utes (7-3) outhit the Roadrunners, 11-7, but UTSA (6-5) won the battle on the mound with 10 strikeouts to the Utes' seven.
Tony Beam had the only multiple-hit game for UTSA, as he went 2-for-3 with a double. Only five total players registered at least one hit.
Utah struck early with a four-run second inning. A pair of Steven Dressler walks and an infield single loaded the bases and a hit by pitch scored the first run for the visitors. A costly throwing error scored two runs and a base hit through the left side drove in the final run of the inning for Utah.
UTSA put the wheels in motion in the bottom of the fifth after C.J. Pickering notched the team's third hit of the day. Beam followed with a double to center field to put runners in scoring position and an Aldo Buendia RBI ground out scored the only run of the day for the Roadrunners.
The Utes combined for three runs between the seventh and eighth innings to pull away.
Riley Ottesen, making his third start of the season, went 7.1 innings and allowed one run on six hits to earn the win.
Meanwhile, Dressler was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 4.2 frames of work.
UTSA now will hit the road for an eight-game road swing, starting with a Tuesday, March 7, matchup at I-35 rival Texas State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
