COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — UMKC sent UTSA to its second consecutive defeat of the weekend with a comeback 4-3 victory against the Roadrunners on Saturday.
The Kangaroos (6-5) jumped on top early by rallying for the doubles point.
Lina Hallgren and Charleen Tiwari got the Birds (5-6) on the board with a 6-3 victory against Marina Albert amd Aliona Ladutska at the third spot in the lineup.
However, UMKC responded with a pair of wins on courts one and two.
Yana Grechkina and Melinda Johnson downed UTSA's top duo of Kylee Kato and Miriam Rosell Canudas in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), and that was followed by a 7-5 triumph at the second position by Mariam Kurasbediani and Thanushree Vale against Denisa Ibrahimovic and Sonia Madroñal Medina.
Hallgren tied things up at the start of singles play with her 6-2, 6-3 win against Albert on court four and the Roadrunners then grabbed the lead when Rosell Canudas picked up her 11th dual-match victory in as many outings this season in a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 decision against Ladutska on center court. The advantage quickly swelled to 3-1 following Laura Cabrera's come-from-behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Kurasbediani at the third slot in the lineup.
However, that would prove to be it for the Roadrunners, as UMKC prevailed in each of the remaining three contests to send UTSA to its fifth setback in its last half dozens matches.
Johnson got the rally started with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory against Ibrahimovic on court No. 2 and that was followed by a 6-1, 6-2 decision by Grechkina against Kato at the fifth position. Katie Fries then clinched the win with her 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Tiwari on the sixth court.
UTSA will conclude its current six-match road trip on Sunday with a 9 a.m. (CT) tilt with Idaho State (3-3).
