SAN ANTONIO — Celeste Loughman, Angelica Nino and Kaley Pyles collected a base hit apiece, but Texas used four home runs to power past UTSA, 9-1, in five innings on Wednesday at Roadrunner Field.
The Longhorns (18-14) built a 7-0 lead after three frames en route to their second victory of the season against the Roadrunners (12-21).
After a scoreless first, Texas plated a pair of runs in the top of the second.
Taylor Ellsworth led off with an infield single and moved to third on a double down the right-field line by Tiarra Davis. With one out, Ellsworth came home on a ground out to the catcher by Tuesday DerMargosian. Davis then crossed when a ball was misplayed on the infield that would have ended the inning.
The Longhorns broke open the contest with a five-run third that featured a solo home run by Devon Tunning and two-run blasts by Reagan Hathaway and Jade Gortarez.
The visitors added to their lead in the next frame on a two-run homer to center field by Ellsworth.
UTSA broke through for a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Bailee Baldwin drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single to left by Pyles. After a pair of strikeouts, Nino grounded a base hit up the middle to push home Baldwin and send Pyles to third. However, a groundout to second by the next batter ended the threat and the game with the eight-run rule.
Brooke Bolinger (5-2) earned the win after striking out two and allowing just one hit in two innings of work.
The Roadrunners will return to Conference USA play with a three-game home series against UTEP (8-23, 3-6 C-USA) this weekend. First pitch in a Saturday doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m followed by a single game at the same time the next afternoon.
