Torres victory in heptathlon leads UTSA after first two days of Roadrunners Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Gabriyella Torres won the heptathlon with a personal record on Friday and that has helped lead the UTSA women's track & field team to second place through four scored events at this weekend's Roadrunners Invitational.

Torres racked up a career-high 4,837 points in the two-day, multi-event competition, which was 249 better than her previous PR from a year ago. Her score was bolstered by victories in six of the seven events — 100m hurdles (PR 14.89w), high jump (PR 5-5 ¾/1.67m), shot put (PR 31-9 ½/9.69m), long jump (17-7 ½/5.37m), javelin (114-6/34.91m) and 800m (2:33.22) — and a runner-up effort in the 200m (PR 26.34w).

"I was really proud of my performance the past two days," Torres said. "I'm looking forward to improving throughout our outdoor season and I can't wait for what is to come."

Meanwhile, N'Dia Warren-Jacques posted her second silver-medal performance in as many weeks in the shot put. The junior from Conroe registered a season-best measurement of 49-6 ¼ (15.09m), which was second to Baylor's Cion Hicks, who set a Park West Athletics Complex record with her winning toss of 55-5 ¾ (16.91m).

The Roadrunners also received a pair of third-place efforts during the second day of action.

Shalise Borden picked up a bronze medal in the hammer with her throw of 177-4 (54.05m) and Chase Whiting also placed third in the hep with her score of 4,217 points.

UTSA sits in second place in the team standings with its 43 points. Texas A&M leads the way with 47, while VCU rounds out the top three with 18.

The three-day meet will conclude on Saturday.
