Old Dominion rolls past Roadrunners in series opener, 9-1

SAN ANTONIO — Old Dominion racked up double-digit hits and held UTSA to seven, as the Monarchs rolled past the Roadrunners by a score of 9-1 on Friday night at Roadrunner Field.

Sam Sinnen worked eight innings and held UTSA to five hits and one run to earn the win for Old Dominion, his first.

The Roadrunners (10-10, 1-3 C-USA) were held to seven hits total with Chris Estrada the lone starter to notch multiple hits. Bryan Arias scored the only run of the game for UTSA in the bottom of the second on a one-out RBI double by Estrada.

Southpaw Nolan Trabanino struggled to find his niche, as he scattered eight hits, allowing five runs, but matched a career high of six strikeouts. It is the third time in his career he's fanned six batters as he took the loss for the Roadrunners.

Old Dominion (18-4, 4-0 C-USA), who extended its winning streak to eight games, scored multiple runs in only three innings.

UTSA scored first in the second, but the Monarchs went ahead 2-1 in the top of the third. Another three runs in the top of the fourth put the visiting team ahead 5-1 and ODU capped its scoring in the seventh after scoring four runs.

All but one starter for Old Dominion recorded at least one hit and the Monarchs were led by second baseman Jared Young, as he had a season-best four hits, including a double, to go along with a pair of runs and RBIs.

The weekend series will continue at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
