Finke, Riley victorious, UTSA men on top of team standings at Roadrunners Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Led by wins by Tyler Finke (shot put) and Adrian Riley (decathlon) on Friday, the UTSA men's track & field team sits on top of the team standings after four scored events at this weekend's Roadrunners Invitational.

Finke registered a career-best measurement of 57-2 ¾ (17.44m) to lead a 1-2-3 Roadrunners finish in the shot put. The mark now stands as the fifth-best performance in school history. Kelsey Benoit (56-11 ¼/17.35m) and Gabe Vargas (56-10 ¾/17.34m) rounded out UTSA's podium finishers in the event.

"I feel like today's performance was good, but I feel like there is potential for improvement," Finke said. "I'm looking forward to our next meet and the rest of the outdoor season."

Meanwhile, Riley scored a career-best 7,318 points en route to winning the decathlon, a total that currently leads the country. His score was bolstered by personal records in the 100 meters (10.87w), long jump (24-3/7.39m), 110m hurdles (15.57) and 1,500m (4:59.16).

"This was a great start to the outdoor season and I am happy with the new personal best," Riley said. "Now I am just going to continue to prepare for the conference meet and beyond."

The Roadrunners also received a second-place performance from Victor Perez in the hammer. The senior from San Antonio registered a throw of 189-5 (57.74m) on his first attempt of the afternoon and that stood after he elected to pass on all three of his tries in the final. Texas A&M's Austin Cook won the event with a meet-record toss of 199-6 (60.80m), which came on his sixth and final attempt of the competition.

UTSA leads the seven-team field with its 50 points, while Texas A&M (28) and Akron (19) round out the top three.

The three-day meet will conclude on Sunday.
