SAN ANTONIO — Celeste Loughman went 2-for-4 with an RBI, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored a pair of unearned runs off three UTSA errors to come away with a 3-2 victory on Wednesday night at Roadrunner Field.
Loughman singled and then produced an RBI double in the fifth to aid the Roadrunners (6-9), who will play their next 10 games away from home. Angelica Niño drove in the other UTSA run with a single, while Lizzy Fox took the tough-luck loss with just one unearned run and a pair of strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief.
The Islanders (3-10) got on the scoreboard first with three hits in the top of the third for a 1-0 lead. The advantage then grew to 2-0 with an unearned run in the fifth before the Roadrunners could cut into the deficit.
Taylor Oberg started the bottom of the fifth with a walk and she moved to scoring position following a sacrifice bunt. Niño then ripped a single up the middle on the third pitch of her at-bat to plate Oberg and cut the Islanders lead in half, 2-1.
Lindsey Stewart put down another sacrifice bunt to push Niño to second and the senior came around to score on Loughman's first double of the season.
Fox, who entered the contest in the fifth, worked a scoreless top of the sixth, but gave up an unearned run in the seventh following a pair of errors to give the Islanders a 3-2 advantage.
Kaley Pyles walked to open the top of the seventh and she went to third following a sacrifice bunt and an infield single by Stewart. With one out and runners at the corners, Loughman looked to tie the score with a hard liner to third base, but Aspen Auger made the catch and tossed over to first to complete the double play and end the game.
Liz Carter got the win for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi after she allowed a pair of runs on five hits in seven innings to improve to 3-5.
UTSA will be back in action at 12:15 p.m. on Friday against Prairie View A&M (1-11) at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station.
