Howells leads Roadrunners on Saturday at UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Syd Howells won a pair of races (100m/200m) and Elesha Alyn added a gold medal in the triple jump on Saturday to lead the UTSA women's track & field team during the final day of action at this weekend's season-opening UTSA Invitational.

Howells began her winning sprint double in the 100 meters, where she clocked 11.44, which now stands as the third-best performance in program history. The sophomore from Round Rock then ran the curve in 23.47 en route to winning the 200m and that, too, ranks as the third-fastest time in school annals.

Meanwhile, Alyn got her final outdoor season off to a great start. The senior from Miami, Fla., skipped to a career-long measurement of 40-3 ½ (12.28m) to top the field of six triple jumpers.

The Roadrunners also received three runner-up efforts from Lynette Amaram in the 800m (2:14.10), Gabriyella Torres in the high jump (PR 5-5/1.65m) and its 400m relay (45.29) and two other bronze medal performances from Colleen Gilbert in the 800m (PR 2:15.05) and its 1,600m relay (3:42.92).

Mia Hicks placed sixth in the discus, but she registered a throw of 157-4 (47.96m), which added 14 inches to the program record she established a year ago.

The Roadrunners placed third in the team standings with their 137 points. Purdue captured the team title with 170.5, while Texas Tech was second with 157.

UTSA will return to action next weekend when it hosts the Roadrunners Invitational. The three-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Thursday, March 23, at Park West Athletics Complex.
