ST. GEORGE, Utah — Aimee Ponte finished 15th to lead the UTSA women's golf team to fifth place at the BYU at Entrada Classic, which concluded on Tuesday at Entrada at Snow Canyon (par 72/6,168 yards).
Ponte fired a 2-over-par 74 in the final round to close out a 224 (77-73-74) and tie for 15th in the 70-player field. The senior wrote down four of her team-high eight birdies in registering her fourth top-20 showing of the season and ninth of her career.
The Roadrunners carded a 912 (313-295-304) to finish fifth in the 12-team field, one shot ahead of Iowa and five in front of Gonzaga. It marked the Birds' second top-five performance in their last four outings.
Nikki Long was three shots and seven places behind Ponte after posting a 227 (78-73-76) to finish 22nd. The junior from San Antonio had two of her seven birdies during her final-round 76.
Julie Houston tied for 29th with a 231 (81-73-77), while Becky McGeehan and Madison Kidd tied for 33rd (80-76-77—233) and 40th (78-78-80—236), respectively.
No. 12 Kent State captured the team title with an 866 (289-286-291) behind individual medalist Caroline Stormo's 4-under 212 (68-72-72), while No. 31 BYU was the runner-up with an 879. UTSA was just six shots behind third-place Tulsa (906) and three back of Wyoming (909).
The Roadrunners will return to the course from March 24-26 when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., for the LSU Tigers Classic.
