SAN ANTONIO — Three Roadrunners scored in double figures to lift UTSA to a 69-55 victory against FIU on Thursday night, snapping a four-game losing skid.
Loryn Goodwin led all scorers with 17 points to go along with five rebounds, five steals and three assists. Meanwhile, Tesha Smith and Carlie Heineman each chipped in with 12 points. Smith registered her sixth double-double of the year, the 20th of her career, with 10 rebounds.
UTSA (12-14, 8-7 C-USA) managed to turn things around against FIU with a strong first half that nearly saw the Roadrunners double up the Panthers at half, 42-26. UTSA shot 50 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, including 44.4 percent from behind the arc, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Goodwin ignited the Roadrunners offense in the second quarter that eventually led to 10 unanswered points and a 22-8 run to end the frame.
Both teams slowed the pace down in the second half. FIU (5-21, 3-12) outscored UTSA 29-27 for its seventh straight loss.
The Panthers managed to cut the Roadrunners lead down to 16 twice – once in the third and a second time in the fourth – and ultimately finished with the 14-point deficit.
UTSA outrebounded FIU 46-33 and was 13-4 in second chance points.
Alexis Gordon led the Panthers with 17 points, while Kristian Hudson added 11.
The Roadrunners return to the Convocation Center on Saturday when they host Florida Atlantic (4-21, 0-14 C-USA) in the final home contest of the season at 2 p.m. UTSA will also be recognizing its two seniors prior to tipoff.
