Long leads UTSA at Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Nikki Long carded a pair of 1-over-par rounds on Monday to highlight action by the UTSA women's golf team at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship.

Originally scheduled to be a three-day tournament that would conclude on Tuesday, officials decided to play the remaining 36 holes on Monday in order to beat bad weather forecast to hit the New Orleans area on Monday night.

Long led the Roadrunners by touring the English Turn Golf & Country Club's 6,239-yard layout with a 73 in each round on the final day. In the morning, the junior from San Antonio posted an eagle on the par-5 11th and added a pair of birdies en route to a 2-under 34 on the back nine. The 2016 all-conference performer posted three more birdies in the final round and finished in a tie for 41st at 10-over 226 (80-73-73).

Aimee Ponte tied for 59th with a 231. The senior from Guernsey fired a 3-over 75 in the second round and finished with a 79 after opening the event with a 77 on Sunday.

Julie Houston tied for 70th with a 75-79-80—234, while Becky McGeehan, who led all Roadrunners with seven birdies, tied for 82nd (73-81-83—237) and Lara Weinstein tied for 89th (86-87-86—259).

The Roadrunners registered a 928 (305-308-315) to finish 17th, 12 shots behind Virginia (916) in a field that featured nine nationally ranked squads.

Top-ranked Stanford captured the team title with a 1-under 863, followed by No. 3 Florida (874), No. 20 Oklahoma State (875), No. 23 Arizona (875) and No. 11 Miami (Fla.) (877) in the top five.

Haley Moore of Arizona claimed individual medalist honors with a 6-under 210 (70-71-69).

The Roadrunners will return to action next week at The Dickson in The Woodlands. The two-day event will tee off next Monday, Feb. 27.
