UTSA women to compete at this weekend's Conference USA Indoor Championships

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's track & field team will begin postseason competition this weekend when it participates in the Conference USA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The two-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Saturday morning at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Day one action will get underway at 9:15 a.m. with the pentathlon and other opening day competition will include the long jump (4 p.m.) and weight throw (7 p.m.) along with the preliminary heats of all the running events beginning at 4 p.m. with the exception of the 5,000 meters (7:30 p.m.) and distance medley relay (8:20 p.m.) finals, which will conclude the first day competition. The remainder of the field events (high jump/pole vault/triple jump/shot put) and all running finals will take place beginning at 11 a.m. the following day (click here the complete meet schedule).

The Roadrunners enter the meet with three marks that rank among the top four in the league this season.

Leading the way is the 1,600m relay of Chelsea Taylor, Paige Patterson, Sierra Andres and Jennifer Arinze, who enter the meet with the third-best time in C-USA this season. The quartet passed the baton in 3:44.32 at the Texas A&M Aggies Invitational back on Jan. 21, which was the fourth-best time in program history. The same quartet raced to a gold medal at the Armory Invitational two weeks ago and the foursome now has recorded two of the top-five performances in school annals this season.

Meanwhile, senior Elesha Alyn and sophomore Syd Howells each stand among the top half of the circuit's leaderboard in fourth place in their respective events.

Alyn has been in the top half of the triple jump rankings all winter following her career-best measurement of 40-7 (12.37m) at the season-opening Texas A&M Team Invitational, while Howells peeled off a personal-record time of 7.53 two weeks ago in the Big Apple.

UTSA has won a total of three indoor conference team crowns and 60 individual/relay championships in its history.
