Roadrunners to host Rice, North Texas this weekend to start final home stand of season

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will look to bounce back from its pair of losses this past weekend when it opens its final four-game home stand with Rice on Thursday at 7 p.m. and North Texas on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

UTSA faced a tough Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech squads this past weekend as the Roadrunners combined for nine-point loss between the two teams. The Roadrunners made last minute comebacks in both games but were unable to overcome the deficits.

The loss drops the Roadrunners to seventh in the Conference USA standings, as they are now 2-3 in their last five contests after a hot 5-1 start.

UTSA still holds the second-best scoring offense in C-USA games with 75.1 points per game and is shooting a third-best .739 free throw percentage. The Roadrunners are also third in steals per game with 8.8 a night.

Individually, junior guard Loryn Goodwin dropped to fourth in scoring with 17.8 points a night while Tesha Smith remains steady at 10th with 14.8 a game. Smith is also fourth in field goal percentage (.542) and seventh in rebounding with 7.9 caroms a night.

Rice begins its four-game road swing in the Alamo City on Thursday as they sit ninth in the league standings with a 14-9 overall record and 5-7 mark in C-USA. The Owls are on a two-game win streak with wins over the Florida schools this past week as they held both teams to just 55 points.

The Owls are putting up just 63.9 points a game, good for 11th in C-USA games, but holding opponents to a fourth-best 64 points a night. On the hardwood, the Owls also own the third-best 3-point field percentage (.351) in league-only games.

Overall, Rice has a pair of players rank in the top-30 in scoring with Jasmine Goodwine (11.8 ppg) and Shani Rainey (11.4 ppg). Rainey also ranks fifth overall in field percentage shooting 53.7 percent.

North Texas (9-14) also begins a four-game road swing beginning with UTEP on Thursday. The Mean Green is on the heels of the Roadrunners in the standings with its even 6-6 league record. NT has now won its last three contests and is 3-2 in its last five.

Leading the charge for the Mean Green is Terriell Bradley as she pours in 13.6 points a game on 36 percent shooting from the floor. Bradley is also 81 percent from the charity stripe and leads the team with 36 steals.

Saturday's contest against North Texas will double as the Roadrunners' annual Pink Out game benefiting the Play 4 Kay Foundation. A silent auction will be held followed by an autograph session at the conclusion of the contest.
