SAN ANTONIO — Louisiana Tech tied the game with 10 seconds on the clock, but Loryn Goodwin drove into the paint and made a fade away shot with 1.1 seconds left to lead UTSA to a 63-61 victory against the Lady Techsters on Saturday afternoon.
Goodwin poured in a game-high 24 points on 8-of-18 shooting with five rebounds, seven steals and a pair of assists. Meanwhile, Tesha Smith added 16 points and Carlie Heineman scored 11.
Louisiana Tech had three players reach double digits and were led by Alexus Malone and Kierra Anthony's 17 points.
The thrilling finish ensued off a 28-27 advantage at the half for UTSA (6-8, 2-1 C-USA) after a strong first quarter was halted in the following frame. Louisiana Tech outscored the Roadrunners 17-13 and even led by two with a little over a minute left in the second. With 43 ticks remaining, Loryn Goodwin drained a 3-pointer to put UTSA back on top.
In the first half, UTSA scored 13 points off nine Lady Techster turnovers as the Roadrunners shot 30 percent from the field.
Momentum remained in favor of the visiting Lady Techsters out of the half but the Roadrunners slowly chipped away at the deficit and tied the game at 40 with 1:45 on the clock on a free throw by Goodwin.
The score bounced back and forth in the final seconds but had UTSA without a field goal in the last two minutes of action as their only points came from the charity stripe. Louisiana Tech (6-8, 1-2 C-USA) scored the last four points of the quarter to lead 44-41.
To start the fourth, UTSA scored six unanswered points to lead 46-42 at the 8:03 mark. The Roadrunners gave up the lead on the following Lady Techster possession but regained it on a 3-pointer by Kasia Kiejdrowska. The lead held the rest of the way despite three ties. Overall, the game featured eight.
UTSA will head to Florida Atlantic next Thursday, Jan. 12, for a 6 p.m. contest.
