SAN ANTONIO — Christian Carrillo won decisive singles and doubles matches to help lead the UTSA men's tennis team to a 6-1 victory against UT Rio Grande Valley on Sunday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Carrillo teamed up with Juri Reckow for a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles that gave the Roadrunners (2-2) the doubles point. The Frisco native later rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 6 singles, which clinched the match for the home side.
UTSA got out to a 1-0 lead after taking two of the three doubles contests.
Fabian Brand and Igor Cantanhede paired up for a 6-3 victory against Rodrigo Del Pozo and Andres Hernandez at No. 2.
However, Elliot Johnstone and Clement Sarradin eked out a 6-4 decision against Kai Breitbach and Axel Cronje at the top of the lineup, sending the battle for the first point to the third court. There, Carrillo and Reckow secured the early lead with their 6-4 win against Koby Jansen and Mateo Schmit.
In singles, Takeru Watanabe breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Hernandez at No. 4, and Cronje swept Sarradin, 6-4, 6-4, to give the Roadrunners a 3-0 advantage.
Jansen pulled UTRGV (1-4) to within 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Leon Hein at No. 5.
Carrillo originally was not scheduled to play in the Roadrunners' singles lineup, but the junior fought back from the 6-4 setback to Del Pozo in the opening set for the decisive win.
Breitbach also pulled out a comeback, his coming on at the top of the lineup. The freshman from Germany battled back from a 6-3 loss in the opening frame with 7-5 and 6-3 decisions against Johnstone.
Reckow and Schmit went three sets at No. 2 with the UTSA freshman coming out on top, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (9-7).
The Roadrunners will return to action on Feb. 8, when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 2 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
